TAOOMA. -. j.;'tj.i.-.j(i-ii k MYTH8.QF HAWAII. Cannibalism Not a Habit of ikm 1st land Aborigines., Nothing seems to be more firmly fixed In foreign opinion about the native peo ple of Hawaii than the Idea that they onco were cannibals and that, at tho time of Capt. Cook's visit, they num. hercd 400,000 souls. A recent Issue of the Anglican Church Chronicle quotes tho Rev. Dr. George W. Vnndewatcr as Baying thnt a congregation of C,000 na tive Hawallans showed what had been done by the church with people who, "but llfty years ago, were caters of hu man IIchIi." It was a most amazing statement to come from nny pulpit, says tho Honolulu Advertiser, but It fairly represents tho average,, unintelli gent opinion of the' masses. To such critics nil Islands between Cancer and Capricorn were once Inhabited by can nibals, though scientists declare that very many of them indeed, Including particularly tho Ilnwallan group, had no iiinii-catlng (lavages. Tho native traditions here, so far as can be traced, nrc quite accurate. For example, there mole, which tells of the arrival on tho bench someSOO years ago of two white Btruugers, who, when they got ashore, knelt and told their beads, corresponds almost precisely as to date with tho Spanish narrative of the loss of ships by a Kona storm from n licet of galleons pnsslng south of here, while trndlng between Acnpulco and Manila. As to the Cook tradition, as It exists in tho Kona district, where the Ilrltlsh navigator was killed aud where the na tives nrc more nearly In their primitive state than elsewhere, It discards tho cannibal theory by means of a simple explanation. According to the account, "after tho death of Capt. Cook, who, during most of his Intercourse with the natives, had been regarded by them as a god, It was decided by tho natives to mako an offer ing of ills body to the gods. Tho vis cera wcro taken out aud placed In a calabash to be offered to 0110 of the powerful gods of tho sen of tho Hawaii an thcogouy, tho viscera being consid ered a higher and better offering than nny other part of tho body. Tho re mainder of tho body was to bo offered to a less powerful god. While the vis cera wcro In the calabash It was found by Homo children, who mistaking It for tho viscera of a pig, which was con sidered a great delicacy, built a flro, cooked and nte It or part of It. Tho re mainder of the body, as all accounts substantially njfree, was nftcrward re turned to Cook's successor In command of tho vessel." ' A bit of circumstantial evidence lies In the fact that, many years ago, a na tive lived In Hawaii who was practi cally an outcast ntnong his pcoplo be cause he was believed to havo onco eaten human llesh. A nnmc Indicative of horror and con tempt was coined for him. As to tho theory thnt 400,000 pcoplo lived hero In Cook's time It was disput ed about forty years ago by James Jackson Jnrves and has never appealed strongly to other Investigators. Tho 100,000 ostltnuto was Cook's own, and ho based It on tho vast crowds he met ut every lauding place aud upon the number of natives lie saw along shore. He did not know that Hawallans, good walkers mid runners nil, followed Ills ship from point to point nnd thnt he was seeing thousands over and over again. Furthermore, there was not food enough In tills group for 400,000, nor was the social system of tho pcoplo calculated to stlmulato the growth of population. Between tho wars nnd tho Hucrltlco of the young nnd the occasion al lean years, It Is doubtful If tho abor igines, wlmu at their numerical zenith, had among them moro than 150,000 souls.
